Award winning Wine Business student Haylee Butler on turning her passion into a career
Having worked for a number of years in government departments in project roles, Haylee felt that it was time to change career trajectory and focus on finding a role that aligned with her passion – wine.
“I loved learning about wine in my personal life so decided to study Wine Business as a way to help me transition into the wine industry.”
With options to enter our Wine Business programs without prior experience in the industry, Haylee enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Wine Business at the University of Adelaide, impressed by the practical skills gained through the program.
“I enjoyed the hands-on approach to the degree - from spending time in the sensory labs to various field trips to local wineries.”
As part of her wine business studies, Haylee had plans to undertake a global learning experience with our international partner, the KEDGE Wine and Business School in Bordeaux, however due to travel restrictions as a result of the pandemic these were postponed.
“COVID cancelled my planned trip to France. But I would recommend current students to look into doing a global learning experience. The University has connections with so many different countries and it's a great way to learn more about the global world of wine.”
Wanting to capitalise on her strong project management and organisational skills, Haylee is seeking new opportunities in the wine industry whilst she completes her studies.
“I want to use my business management experience in the wine industry - the goal is to hopefully one day manage a small local wine brand.”
When asked to reflect on her studies so far, Haylee drew a line between what she was learning and how this could be applied to her future career in the wine industry.
“My study relates directly to my career aspirations by giving me an introduction to the world of wine business. I feel more prepared to have meaningful conversations in the industry, and can now hold my own in business discussions.”
Recently, Haylee’s hard work and passion for the industry was solidified, winning the Best Wine Student Award at the Wine Communicators of Australia Awards.
