Finance and Business Analytics

The Finance and Business Analytics cluster encompasses and promotes all aspects of finance and business analytics related research that currently takes place across the Business School and the International Centre for Financial Services (ICFS) at the University of Adelaide.

Our researchers publish across a broad range of fields. In finance, this includes asset pricing, banking, corporate finance and market microstructure. In business analytics, this reflects quantitative analysis in the fields of operations research, management, marketing, and education. Papers have appeared in leading journals, such as Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Accounting and Economics, The Accounting Review, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Financial Markets and Journal of Banking and Finance. In collaboration with ICFS, we also operate four research groups that specialise in specific areas that the discipline is building a reputation.

  • Climate Finance Group

The climate finance group contains a cross disciplinary network of academic interested in climate finance, environmental, social and governance (ESG) and investments. Members have been involved in category 1 sponsored research examining the impact of climate change to crop insurance contracts, have won the 2022 ABDC national award for climate action research, published in FT 50 journals and engaged with industry on carbon accounting.

Creating, publishing and supporting top quality academic research in corporate finance are the cornerstone activities of the group. Our aim is to conduct cutting edge empirical corporate finance research based on sound economic theory, employing robust econometric methods and original datasets to discover new knowledge. Our current research focuses on entrepreneurial finance, managerial risk-taking incentives, mergers and acquisitions, institutional holdings, capital raising, labor and finance as well as law and finance. The group is also home to the International Journal of Managerial Finance (ABDC A ranked journal). Members regularly publish in A* and FT-50 journals on corporate finance issues.

The group also offers services directly to Indigenous businesses and registered native title body corporations, including bespoke financial management and corporate governance courses. In addition, our researchers work to improve Indigenous outcomes with the wider Indigenous support ecosystem, including Federal and State Governments, and listed and unlisted mining and energy companies.
