The Yunus Social Business Centre at the University of Adelaide promotes and sustains enterprise as a deliberate vehicle for social good. We use our network of enterprise specialists and academics to support those who believe enterprise can be a driver for positive social impact, not only a means to create wealth.
The Yunus Social Business Centre at The University of Adelaide (a joint initiative of the University and Yunus Centre) promotes and sustains enterprise as a deliberate vehicle for social good.
The Centre provides connection, empowerment, expertise, exploration and initiative. We bring all our resources – in particular the knowledge, network, teaching and research capabilities of the University – to the nurture of social business and the support of those engaged in it.
The Centre recognises that social enterprises operate in a complex environment, in which certainty of outcomes is rare. We know that not all businesses in our network will produce the change they hope for. But we celebrate setbacks as opportunities to learn.
We are dedicated to sharing our knowledge and learnings with the social business community to further the work of the global social business network.
What is Social Business?
Social Business is a term coined by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus. According to Yunus a social business is a business with “a social vision at its core.” A social business exists, first, to address a social need. But a social business is not a charity – it generates profit and is financially self-sustaining over time.
Yunus Centre was founded in 2011 by Professor Yunus, Saskia Bruysten and Sophie Eisenmann to expand the success of social business around the world.
