Enrolment for 2010 - continuing students

The Course Planner has been updated with 2010 courses (timetable should be available in December). Enrolment into programs is staggered during the enrolment period, starting on the 6 January.  Enrolment Open Times for the date and time your program opens in 2010 will be published on the Enrolments website in due course.

Program Rule Changes in 2010

1) As of 2010 new students will be required to study our new course Business Valuations II instead of Financial Economics II if they are following the B.Commerce (Corporate Finance) pathway.  This rule change is not compulsory for students who commenced prior to 2010, however, if the new course fits in to your study plan as an elective we encourage you to think about choosing this course – it will be offered in semester 1 and 2.

2) As of 2010 new students will be required to study Commercial Law I in their first year of the B.Commerce (International Business) pathway.  This rule change is not compulsory for students who commenced prior to 2010, however, if you have a level I elective to fill we encourage you to enrol in this course prior to studying Legal Aspects of International Business III.

Course unit Changes 2010

Level III Business School courses have changed from 4 to 3-units. (Please note that other Schools may change level II and level III courses to 3-units in 2009 so check the unit-value of all courses).

Note: level I courses (courses with the catalogue number starting with '1') cannot be counted as electives towards level II or III.

Overloading

All full-time Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Finance study plans consider 12-units of study per semester as a standard full-time enrolment, i.e usually 4 x 3-units courses or Anything over 12-units is an overload. If you wish to enrol into an overload you should be aware that it can seriously affect your academic performance. Research has shown that a student may not reach their academic potential if they overload.

From 2009 the maximum number of units you can enrol into via Access Adelaide is 12. You need to apply for permission to enrol in more than 12-units per semester and your application will be assessed using the following criteria:

GPA is >4.6 or ~60% average

Students will normally be approved to overload up to 15-units.

GPA is <4.6 or ~60% average, but it is your FINAL SEMESTER

Attempts will be made to avoid making students return for another semester with only 1 course to study. However, approval to overload may need to be denied if academic performance indicates that a student may not cope with an overload.

GPA is <4.6 or ~60% average and it is NOT your final semester

You will only be given permission to overload (over 12-units) in exceptional circumstances. Your application will be assessed by the Program Director.

Unsatisfactory Progress / Academic Review Students will not be given permission to overload.

If you would like to apply to overload, please fill out the Request to Overload form. A response will be sent to your student email account.

If you are one of these transition students you may be able to graduate with a minimum of 70-units. Please make an appointment with a Program Adviser if you think you may be affected.

All level III Commerce, Finance and Economics courses will be changing to 3 units in 2010.  Many others areas have already changed their units or will be changing in 2010 so please keep this in mind when planning your 2010 enrolment

Enrolment Hints

Remember to use the Enrolment Error Form if you encounter problems during enrolment.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare
Preparing a timetable plan for semesters 1 and 2 will save you lots of time. The easiest way to do this is to download and print the Class Planner (copies also available from the Business School Office) so that you can schedule your studies. Firstly, note your lecture details as these times aren't going to change. Then note a couple of suitable tute details for each course. This process will ensure you are prepared before you log onto Access Adelaide to enrol.

Download the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Finance Undergraduate Student Handbook.

First In Basis
You are encouraged to enrol as early as possible to secure your preferred classes as enrolments are on a first in basis.

24 Course Degree Structure

From 2008 the courses within the Bachelor of Commerce, Economics, Finance and Business Information Technology degrees will become 24-course degrees. This will be done by changing the unit value of Level II and Level III courses to 3-units.

The new 24-course degree will be;

Level I - Eight 3-unit courses (no change from 20-course degree)

Level II - Eight 3-unit courses (changed from six, 4 unit courses) - commenced 2009

Level III - Eight 3-unit courses (changed from six, 4 unit courses) - commencing 2010

Total units for the 3-year degrees will remain at 72 units

The reasons for the change include:

  • Increased flexibility for students

  • To align the structure of these Adelaide degrees with those of the other G08 Australian universities

  • Improved ability to include study from a number of disciplines

  • An increase in the courses offered in some disciplines

How does this affect students enrolled before 2008?

If you meet the following conditions your degrees should not be affected;

  • commenced your degree in 2007 or prior

  • complete your second year courses before 2009 and

  • complete third year courses before 2010

What elective can I study?

An elective is a non compulsory course that you can select.  There are hundreds of courses you could choose.  You can select courses from the following areas: Commerce, Economics, Design Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences (includes History, Politics, Gender Studies, Work and Social Inquiry, Anthropology, Asian Studies, Media, Philosophy), Science or Mathematical and Computer Sciences.

List of non Commerce level I elective courses
List of non Commerce level II elective courses

Basically, you can select to study any course as an elective provided that you satisfy the prerequisite, assumed knowledge and there is no restriction listed on the course.  Prerequisites, Assumed Knowledge and Restrictions are all noted in the Course Planner.

Many level II Humanities and Social Science courses have a prerequisite of '12 units of Level I Humanities and Social Science' courses. If you have passed (or given advance standing for) the first year Economics courses Principles of Microeconomics, Business and Economic Statistics (formerly BDA), Principles of Macroeconomics, International Financial Institutions & Markets I you have satisfied the pre-requisite. These Economics courses are accepted as part of Humanities and Social Science.

Please consider the level of the elective and any required pre-requistes or assumed knowledge when making your choice.

I'm interested in the International Business pathway. What are the 'approved level II Humanities and Social Sciences Courses'?

Please see this list of approved courses.

How do I receive credit for courses completed at another tertiary institute?

You will need to complete an application for transfer credit and attach a copy of your transcript (original or certified copy) and the detailed course outline of the relevant courses. Applications for Transfer credit are available from the Business School Office.

Do I enrol into a tute or a lecture?

When enrolling in Business School courses you will be enrolling into a tute that will automatically place you into the associated lecture. There is an exception - where there is a repeat lecture stream the lecture choice is not automatic. You will need to select the lecture class number after entering the tute class number.

Can I swap my tute time?

You can only swap tutorials up until the end of the second week of each semester and this must be done on-line. Swapping tutes means that you should first check the Course Planner if there is space in the tute you have elected to swap to, then you should immediately drop yourself from the course (i.e lecture/tutorial/workshop - completely delete your enrolment in this course you are in and immediately add yourself into the new tute. If possible, have a few tutes that you are able to swap into.

IMPORTANT: After the second week of semester you cannot add courses to your enrolment. If you try to swap tutorials, you will not be able to enrol yourself back into the course.

If you're a continuing student and need to change your enrolment, but cannot find an open lecture/tutorial we suggest you wait until the mid-semester break as this is when most students change their enrolment.

Where do I find class numbers?

The Course Planner allows you to search all courses that are scheduled, view all of the classes for each course and to plan your timetable BEFORE you enrol. You can search and view class details for courses one by one or you can add courses to a cart and build up a list of all classes for your courses. You can also print this information if you wish.

NB: a 'class number' is a five-digit number starting with '1' for semester 1 and '2' for semester 2 courses.

Who can help further?

Errors may occur for a variety of reasons - because you are trying to add a class that is full, you are trying to add a class that clashes or you are overloading. If you receive an error message your enrolment in that class will not be processed.

Need help? You can complete the online Enrolment Error form with details of the problem, or contact the Enrolment Hotline on 8303 3833 for assistance.
