Commerce Alumni
We recognise your time is precious and that is why The University of Adelaide Commerce Network is committed to ensuring it is used wisely and your experiences are both enriching and rewarding.
Whether you are currently studying a University of Adelaide Commerce degree or have graduated there are numerous benefits to becoming a member of this exclusive group. These benefits range from creating personal and professional networks with like minded people to attending both social and professional events through out the year.
Becoming a member is simple and easy and best of all its completely FREE. By joining Adelaide onLION, the University’s online community you can become a member of the Commerce Alumni Network community.
The last twelve months have presented a challenge for the Commerce Alumni and its core committee members. Even with our day to day activities hampering our abilities to dedicate time and resources into the Alumni’s primary roles and activities, we have seen some remarkable achievements, with the Adrian Morrissey and Sea & Vines Festival events being the stand out events for the year. Not withstanding, the commerce Alumni needs to structurally formalize itself in order to capture these inefficiencies and move forward.
The start of this year saw a change to those representing the Alumni, with key members over the previous years moving on to focus of their careers. I would like to take this moment to thanks all of those members; Cheryl Wenham, Andrew Dolley & George Georgiadis, for their efforts and contribution to the Commerce Alumni. With these members moving on, it is the Alumni’s loss.
The committee met at the start of the year set ourselves some realistic goals, 11 months later; we have again struggled to achieve all of the activities on our program. As Alex Brown iterated in last years report, I do not believe this was due to a lack of interest and enthusiasm, but reflects the busy work and social schedule of our committee members & Alumni.
This year’s highlights, as previously mentioned, have been the Adrian Morrissey, ‘Wok in a box’ event, as well as the Sea & Vines Festival. Once again, I would like to thank Breanna Slattery for her efforts in organizing the Sea & Vines Tour over the June long weekend; it was this year’s most successful event. Adrian’s speech in April, hosted by FAD Bar on Waymouth St in the City, gave listeners a chance to see what starting a small business involves and the challenges that one can expect to face, and how to manage your business around them.
Our final event was to be a Speed mentoring event held in the Napier Building for 3rd year students to try a gain an understanding of life after University. Andrew Partington put in a sterling effort to promote and organize the event, however, as the event was due to start, a lack of interest meat that this particular activity had to be cancelled. In the end, it was the clash with SWOTVAC that caused this. Andrew, thank you for your efforts.
Looking to 2009, we need to build on the size of the committee. Involving student representatives will seek to reduce the burden placed on our current committee members. Those with a more flexible schedule will be the ones focusing on the key goals and objectives. This year has seen unique and exciting events, something Alex Brown requested as he passed on the role of President to me.
I wish the new committee well and hope their efforts next year will enable us to improve and move forward. I look forward to 2009 and welcome any new faces to the Commerce Alumni and wish everyone the best of luck with their external endeavors.
